Latvia is an attractive destination for landscape lovers

 


Surrounded by Estonia, Russia, Belarus, Lithuania, and the Baltic Sea is the country of Latvia. The country is a mixture of urban attractions, such as the capital of Riga, and scenic attractions. From waterfalls to national parks, Latvia offers great views and plenty of outdoor activities. Beaches, forests, and medieval villages vie for your attention. Below, is a tour of the most famous tourist places in Latvia.


Riga




Riga is undoubtedly the most popular place to visit in Latvia. The city looks old and medieval, but a lot of the architecture was rebuilt in the 1990s. On the other hand, the part of the city known as Centers is home to more than 800 stunningly Art Nouveau buildings. One of the best ways to explore Riga is on foot, stopping to take pictures of the wonderful sites along the way. If you are interested in learning about Latvian history and culture, the Latvian Open Air Museum is a great choice. There is a group of traditional houses, people walking around in an authentic dresses.


Rundāle Palace


 

Latvia has its fair share of palaces, and Randall's Palace is certainly one of the most beautiful. The Baroque building was erected during the 18th century for the Dukes of Courland. Sculptors and painters from Germany and Italy were brought in to work on the palace, and the fine details are still a highlight. Most of the rooms are still periodically furnished and are open for tours. You can see the completely renovated pavilion that once belonged to the Duchess, admires Gilt Hall, and stroll the Great Gallery.


Cesis 




Cesis is one of the oldest cities in the country. The old town is the main reason to visit, and the cobbled streets are what define the point of exploration. Cesis also boasts of having two extraordinary castles, side by side. The first is the original Cesis Castle, founded in the 13th century and today in ruins. Nearby is the castle of New Cesis, built in the 18th century. The new castle is beautiful and surrounded by wonderful grounds. The castle is also home to the Cesis Museum of History and Art.


Kuldīga 



In the small town of Kuldiga, a river runs between the houses and along the streets, giving the city the nickname the Latvian Venice. However, it is the largest waterfall in Europe that most people see. The waterfall is 240 meters wide. During the spring, salmon jump over the waterfall, and locals fish spectacularly. You can also enjoy watching the brick bridge that spans the waterfall. Although damaged in World War II, much of it is still intact.
